As usual, the latest news coverage of the ceasefire in Gaza has been woefully disingenuous. It is being reported that Hamas is threatening to delay the release of the next three Israeli hostages, which is true. However, what is not being reported is that Israel has not been meeting the terms of the ceasefire. The reason for the delayed release of hostages is “the obstruction of the humanitarian protocol of the ceasefire deal.” Israel has delayed the delivery of important machinery needed to begin reconstruction and removal of debris. Israel has also not allowed the full amount of fuel—allowing only 15 trucks of fuel per day when the agreement stipulates 50 trucks of fuel.
Furthermore, and perhaps most importantly, despite the ceasefire, Israel has been carrying out periodic attacks on Palestinians in Gaza, killing at least 25 Palestinians there since January 19. If Hamas had killed 25 Israelis during the ceasefire, would the world and the media be silent about it? I highly doubt it.
These are important elements of the ceasefire deal that are desperately needed for the recovery and survival of the Palestinian people. Why should Hamas be expected to hold up their end of the bargain if Israel refuses to hold up theirs? Americans should be wary of how news about this war is being reported in our media. It almost always is biased towards Israel and often does not tell the whole story. This is just one more example of that.
